I attended the Huntsville Tax Day Tea Party at noon today, in protest of the current taxation system and unfathomably massive federal spending. (Thanks to Saintseester for calling my attention to the time and location, as it had fallen through my cracks.) I extrapolated as best I could and put the crowd at between 1,500 and 2,000. HPD estimated 2,300.
The scope of the orgiastic financial mayhem in Washington is depressing, but what has really gotten to me is how much of a pass it’s all getting. Billion, trillion; what’s the difference? Your money, my money; what’s the difference? I’ve been deeply concerned that far too few people are paying sufficient attention.
I was encouraged and recharged by today’s event. I was hoping for 1,000 attendees; instead I got more than double that. I was hoping to spot an engaged young person here and there; instead they were everywhere. (Lord knows we need them, as seductive as the opposing rhetoric is.)
I’m cautiously optimistic that folks really are getting it. As bad as it has been for as long as it has been so, perhaps we’re finally going to stand up and scream “STOP!” I hope I can look back on today and say I was there for the awakening of the sleeping giant.

I am glad you got a shot in the arm from it. I wish I could have gone. Right now, I am adding up all the taxes my family paid in 2008 (including federal, state, sales, utilities, other). As the total EXCEEDS 1/4 of what we owe on the house, it is a sobering reality how many people are not invested in the government they are pressing to spend our money.
Looks like a really dangerous group of radicals there. Hope it didn’t get too out of hand!
