February 1: 290.5 lbs.

That’s a loss of 6.5 lbs. from January 1, and a definite step away from the cliff.  Nearly all of the loss is a result of (mostly) month-long pescetarianism (a vegetarian diet plus seafood).

I added poultry back on January 26, and overindulged a bit.  Without doing that, I think I’d have finished in the high 280s, where I spent most of the third week.

The novelty was good for my thought processes, and essentially erased several bad habits.  (I found I didn’t have much interest in fast food without eating beef or pork, for example.)  It became important to me to have a nutritious and correctly-sized breakfast.  Generally this has been a bowl of high-fiber cereal with skim milk.  (Wow, I guess I’m that demographic now.)  Haven’t been snacking much, and when I have I’ve made good choices.

Improvements I need to make include eating and drinking less at night.  The “just because I’m home” beer largely needs to vanish, for example, and I really should stop eating anything after 7 or so.

For February, I’m keeping sensibly-prepared poultry available.  I’m also adding three “cheats” a month.  When I spend a cheat, I can eat red meat for a meal, or unhealthy poultry (buffalo wings, for example).  I’ll see how that goes, but I suspect I may be able to do that indefinitely.

Finally, it’s time to think about my activity level.  I’m not going to get too wound up systemizing it from the outset, because I know from long experience that I’ll resent it and quit.  My doctor suggested that I start with making sure I walk two miles daily.  I have a pedometer, so that’s easy enough to measure.  Moreover, when the weather breaks, I’m sure I’ll have renewed interest in geocaching.

Sounds good to me.  I’m expecting to keep the train rolling this month.

  1. My cheats this month will all happen within one 3-day span, unfortunately! Then I plan on being too hungover to eat for the rest of February. I call it “The Saints are going to The SuperBowl and the Seesters are going to Mardi Gras” diet.
