At least six dead in Tucson shooting; U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords shot in head

At least six people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a meeting U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords was holding at a Tucson grocery store this morning.  Multiple others are injured, some critically.

Giffords was shot through the head—in one side, and out the other—from a distance of four feet, if I understand the doctor at the press conference correctly.  He said she was still critical, but out of surgery, and was responding to commands.

A suspect is in custody.

You know, I had planned to blog about something else today, but I’m just not much motivated to be light-hearted now.  This is an unthinkable personal tragedy for everyone directly involved, of course, but I also loathe the fact that this was a group of citizens peaceably assembled and engaged in their own governance.  It’s visitation of the worst horror on one of the things that defines the United States of America.

God be with all affected by this horrific tragedy.
