The ’70s were just…wow. I don’t know. They were the ’70s. Perhaps because of the gravity of what the country was experiencing as a whole (Vietnam, Watergate, the energy crisis, etc.), American pop culture was yanked that much more toward the goofy. You can pick on my beloved ’80s all you want, but in the end the only accusations that stick are those of shiny, happy optimism and possibly misguided fashion sense. Whereas much of the pop culture of the ’70s was nearly inconceivably silly. “It was just…goontown.” – Gene Simmons, Kiss

I was not quite 9 when they ended, but I still remember the ’70s quite a bit–partially because I have a really good memory, but also because my mother was ass-deep in it at the time, including the CB craze. Her handle was “Sugar,” and she had a Buick station wagon (just like the one at left, only cream yellow) that had its antenna in the windshield, so it wasn’t obvious she had a CB. So she hung her mike on her rear view mirror so people would know she had her ears on. (And I swear to you I’m not making a word of this up.)

Now I couldn’t possibly scream “too much time on your hands!” at the person who made this clever video for C.W. McCall’s monster 1975 hit “Convoy.” After all, I just sat and watched it. Mercy sakes alive.

You will too. (evil cackle)
