- Want to see a six-pound rat with inch-long canine teeth?
- Is anyone doing good, unpretentious, straightforward, working stiff, barroom rock and roll anymore? You know, six- or seven-piece lineups with a saxophone and a harmonica and stuff, singin’ ’bout girls and good times? Who is today’s John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band, or Michael Stanley Band, or even early Huey Lewis? (Springsteen misses; too political, and with long-expired blue collar credentials.)
- Dad’s shopping for a new buggy, and I took a close look at a Hyundai Genesis with him yesterday at lunch. It’s quite impressive. If you still hold negative opinions about Korean cars on principle, it’s time to jettison them.
- Washed my cell phone a couple of weeks ago. (That’s not good for them, by the way.) I almost had it replaced at wirelessgalaxy.com, but they pissed me off, and I’ve repeatedly judged the story too boring to tell in detail. (Stay away from this merchant; trust me). Anyway, a colleague wants an iPhone, and wanted to get rid of his BlackJack II, so I got into a three-month-old one of those for less than I had already mentally spent to replace my simple slider. Cool.
- Google is blurring faces on Street View, in the stated interest of privacy. Remember, computers do exactly what you tell them to.
- Oh, and if you ask Google Maps about driving from Seattle to Honolulu, check out step 8.
- I’m almost 38 years old and have never been anywhere dark enough to see the Milky Way in the sky. I might see about rectifying that this year.

Bon Jovi does some good barroom rock-n-roll. Probably a tad glossy for your purposes. When grunge took over, seems most bars went country and never returned. Not that I ever really frequented bars. As it were. Ahem.

BTW, I’m sporting a new Nokia 6301. I needed a WiFi-enabled phone to help out the T-Mobile signal at my abode. Great signal everywhere else except in my living room. Handy to be able to piggy back on the router.
They want $129 for an upgrade with a two year contract. $179 upgrade without contract extension. New customers can get it for $29.99 with a 2 year contract. The sales rep at the stores (I talked to several of them) wouldn’t give me the $30 deal as an upgrade. So I called customer service. The guy took one look at my account, noted that I was a long-time valued customer (well, yeah, I HAVE been with y’all since before you were T-Mobile), and gave me the phone for $10 plus $5 shipping. Works for me, knowing that mobile phones cost about as much as a gumball to make and that the $15 total covered all the packaging, manuals, and UPS fees.
Mobile phone companies are still scammers. But they’ve become the necessary evil that’s replaced the local wired TelComs.
Get the feeling I’m avoiding some work this afternoon? Deadlines. Ugh.
I got nightly views of the Milky Way when I was over in Afghanistan. It’s definitely breath taking. There is very little light pollution over there to start with and if you can image a blacked out camp…all I could say was wow!
Rat ain’t nuthin. I’ve seen tougher possums on Old Railroad Bed Rd.
On my way out to Burning Man last August I drove the stretch of I-80 between Salt Lake City and the NV state line around midnight. Traffic was practically zero and not a man made light source for 45 miles. The night sky was absolutely beautiful! And HUGE. After driving back home across big sky states NV, UT, WY and NE, I felt claustrophobic when I returned to the tree lined interstates of KY and TN.
